Over the years, the city Thessaloniki is the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia, an important commercial center of Byzantium, conquered by the Crusaders was the Turks. It is famous as the birthplace of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Today the city is an important economic, industrial and political center of population size over 800 000 people (including suburbs). Port is of utmost importance for Greece. The major streets, parks and squares provide nice lawns and rows of trees. There are old houses and neoclassical buildings stand alongside modern structures. People from Thessaloniki are known throughout Greece for its courtesy and hospitality. The town is popular with its great kitchen – no one can resist the delicious cakes and pies, do not forget to visit one of the many tavernas offering traditional Greek dishes. The life is the city do not stop until midnight, as the large squares with tavernas are hosting young and old Greeks, who enjoy all the night. Usually it is really hard to find a place in the Thessaloniki tavernas without reservation and you should prepare to meet really different culture.
