KingstonKingston is far different from the calm Caribbean capitals. Inhabited by over 700 000 people, the capital’s largest English-speaking city in the West Indies and a leading cultural center of Jamaica. The city was founded in 1690, after the devastating earthquake that destroyed Port Royal. Gradually developed and became the biggest center of the island. In 1755 Kingston first became the capital of British colony, and in 1872 was finally recognized as the capital of Jamaica. Unfortunately, the blows of nature does not end here – in 1907 the most sinister earthquake in history, led to hundreds of victims in the capital and leaving thousands of Jamaican families homeless. In subsequent years, Kingston is becoming a boiling urban metropolis, a thriving business center of the region and internationally recognized music industry. Today, traveling around the capital is a wonderful alternative to avoid crowded tourist resorts like Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios and to experience the authentic life of Jamaica people. The best hotels in Kingston are located in the new part of town. Good to know that capital is generally not a very good reputation as a tourist destination because of criminality and periodic civil unrest in the city. You are advised to avoid walking in the center at night. However, if you are reasonable and prudent during their stay, the city will surely fascinate and enchant.
